Liquid neon is used as a refrigerant in cryogenic plants. Previously, neon was used in the industry as an inert atmosphere, but was supplanted by the cheaper argon. Gas-discharge lamps, signal lamps in electronic equipment, photovoltaic cells, rectifiers are filled with neon. A mixture of neon and helium is used as a operating environment in gas lasers (helium-neon laser). The tubes filled with a mixture of neon and nitrogen give a red-orange glow by passing an electric discharge through them, and therefore they are widely used in advertising. Neon lamps are used for signal purposes in lighthouses and airfields, as their red color is faintly dispersed by fog and mist.
